Fresh casualty takes Arunachal’s monsoon-related death toll to 14

Monsoon-triggered landslides claimed one more life and left another person missing in the newly created Bichom district of Arunachal Pradesh, in the past 48 hours, according to an official report.

Itanagar: Monsoon-triggered landslides claimed one more life and left another person missing in the newly created Bichom district of Arunachal Pradesh, in the past 48 hours, according to an official report.

A person died in Sachung village on Tuesday following a landslide, while another was swept away by the Pachuk river. One more individual sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment, a report from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), said here on Thursday.

With this, the total death toll from monsoon-related disasters in the northeastern state has risen to 14.

The SEOC report detailed that of the total fatalities, seven occurred in East Kameng, two in Lower Subansiri, and one each in Longding, Lohit, Anjaw, Kra Daadi, and Bichom districts.

While, eleven people died due to landslides, one in a flood-related incident, another from a wall collapse, and one person was killed in May when a tree fell on him during inclement weather in Longding.

In addition to the human toll, five others sustained injuries in various incidents linked to the monsoon fury.

While the flood situation has improved, over 33,251 people in 25 districts remain affected. As many as 306 villages across Arunachal Pradesh have been impacted by the recent floods and landslides.

The report informed that as many as 729 houses were damaged, and 617 livestock deaths were recorded, including 486 poultry and 62 other animals. The authorities have set up two relief camps in Namsai and Changlang districts, currently sheltering 52 displaced families comprising 239 individuals, the report added.
