NF Railway focus on boosting Northeast trade

GUWAHATI: As part of its thrust to boost the economy of northeastern States, a team of the Business Development Units' (BDU) team of Tinsukia Division of NF Railway met District officials of Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh and discussion were held how to increase the income of farmers and Self Help Groups (SHGs), according to a press release.

Building market linkage to transport and space at stations for showcasing and selling of handicrafts, locally processed/packed products were discussed. Various aspects of transportation of agricultural products from Changlang area of Arunachal Pradesh through train from New Tinsukia to Kochi were discussed.

During the last week of December, 2021 maize was transported from Purnea to Azara as a result of BDU's effort. Stone chips were transported from Damdim of Alipurduar Division, Shribar, New Harangajao, Panchgram, Amoni and New Haflong of Lumding Division to different destinations. Cement traffic was loaded from STAR siding, Lanka and Salchapra of Lumding Division for various destinations. Clinker from Bihara of Lumding Division; coal from Tuli of Tinsukia Division; raw betel nuts, black tea, cardamom, sesame seeds etc. from New Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Mariani were transported to different destinations during the week.

NF Railway has set up Business Development Units (BDUs) at the Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding and Tinsukia Divisions and also at the Zonal Headquarters level to increase the freight transportation volume. These BDUs are having frequent interactions with Trade & Industry players within their respective areas to find new traffic for movement by train.

Railways being a faster and cheaper mode of transport than the roadways, this will boost the local economy by creating larger markets across the country. NF Railway has been successful in carrying produces of the North-east to the bigger markets across the country to help local farmers, agro-producers and traders. Business Development Units (BDU) formed in NF Railway have acted as a single window solution for freight business.
