ITANAGAR: The State capital police, in collaboration with the organizers of the Miss Capital event, distributed rose flowers to bikers riding without helmets on the occasion of Valentine's Day at the NE departmental store near here on Monday.

Speaking to the reporters, Capital Superintendent of Police (SP) Jimmy Chiram said that it is a part of road safety month awareness campaign. He said that usually, the traffic police department organizes such programmes every year, but this time the team of Miss Capital was invited to be a part of it. The police on February 15 will also distribute free helmets.

"This is a road safety awareness campaign to recognize the graveness of the matter and to enlighten people of the ways to become more cognizant about their safety on the road," he said.

He said that the message to the people is very simple, to follow traffic rules and keep the roads safe.

Chiram also informed that the month-long traffic awareness has been effective in the ICR (Itanagar Capital Region) as most of the people are following the rules by wearing helmets, thereby decreasing challan numbers.

"Though there is a lack of parking spaces in the town, the public are enormously cooperative in maintaining parking rules. We hope the people continue cooperating with the department in maintaining rules and regulations of traffic," he said. He also said the district administration is aware of the growing traffic congestion due to lack of parking spaces. However, it is also taking cognizance of the matter and accordingly implementing a few ideas step-wise to solve the issue.
