DIGBOI: A massive sapling distribution and plantation programme was carried out by Rural Works Department Miao in Arunachal's Changlang district here recently to commemorate the campaign 'Meri Matti Mera Desh. The significant event organized under the banner of the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, Rural Works Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, witnessed an overwhelming response from the common people, including the nature lovers across Miao, the home of the world-famous Namdapha National Park, which is the habitat of the four feline species of big cats, namely the tiger, leopard, snow leopard, and clouded leopard, beside the rich flora kingdom.
The participation of a host of engineers and other officials of the department, led by K. Tabyo, the Chief Engineer Eastern Zone, made the event far-reaching and impactful with the theme 'Each sapling to one martyr'. The engineer urged that this campaign, which kicked off, be carried forward unabated across the districts and greater jurisdiction while addressing the gathering, highlighting the significance, meaning, and objective of the campaign 'Meri Matti Mera Desh, an initiative of the government of India coinciding with the celebration of the nation's 77th Independence Day.
Laying extra emphasis on holding a periodic awareness campaign in the area, Tabyo urged the people to actively take part in afforestation and ensure that the green environment is far from human undue interference. "So far as planting a sapling is concerned, every individual should consider it his or her duty to plant the saplings, no matter whose land it belongs to", added the official.
Meanwhile, Somto Toham, one of the active public leaders of Miao, lauding the efforts of the department, said that the people of Miao, including various NGOs and CBOs, have been working hard to keep the Miao area green. "The local MLA Kamlung Mossang, one of the senior cabinet ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, has also been going the extra mile over a period of time to encourage the act of afforestation through various mechanisms to maintain a green cover around to ensure a balanced ecosystem to prolong the lives of both flora and fauna,"added Toham.
