The state of Arunachal Pradesh was formed from the erstwhile North-East Frontier Province (NEFA) region and became a full-fledged state on 20 February 1987.

The state borders Assam and Nagaland to its south and also shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the East and also shares a 1,129 km border with China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Furthermore, the easternmost state of India shares a hotly contested border with China in the north at the McMahon Line.

It is to be noted that the McMahon Line, which is the boundary line between India and China, is not recognized by China and Beijing aspires to alter its status quo.
