ITANAGAR: The Department of Public Libraries in Arunachal Pradesh is going to start network connectivity in at least ten public libraries across the state shortly under the National Mission on Libraries (NML).

"Under the NML, 5 to 10 public libraries in the State will be given internet connectivity to benefit all categories of readers, students, researchers, professionals, children by providing them with speedy access to digital information service," said the Director of Public Libraries, Jotom Borang, here on Monday.

Urging the district librarians to be sincere and better prepared to serve the patrons as the public libraries have always been at the heart of the communities, the Director said, "We have to make the district libraries as model libraries by providing access to the huge resources of information and knowledge." He also announced that from next year onward, two best librarians would be selected and felicitated on the National Librarian Day.

He added, inspection of district libraries would be done by the officials from the Directorate, twice a year, in a bid to create a sense of competition among the librarians for the honours. Speaking on the occasion, Dr KK Pandey, Librarian, Reference Library, Directorate of Research, said that "amid the challenges in this digital age, we the librarians have to be innovative." He further stated: "With the advent of new technologies, reading habits of some of our patrons have changed and therefore, we should be innovative to stay relevant."

He also suggested inter-linking of the public libraries for better monitoring and towards meeting the needs of techno-savvy people by giving them greater access to reliable information, an official release informed here today.
