GUWAHATI: In a proud moment for Assam, 25 personnel from the state are among the 942 awardees recognized with Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of Republic Day 2025. The awards, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, celebrate the exceptional bravery and commitment of individuals serving in the Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services.
Medal for Gallantry (GM): 95 recipients nationwide, including personnel from Assam, for acts of conspicuous bravery in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, and apprehending criminals.
Regional Distribution:
28 from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas,
28 from Jammu & Kashmir,
3 from the North-East (including Assam), and
36 from other regions.
President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM): 101 awarded nationwide for outstanding service records.
Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM): 746 awarded for dedicated and resourceful service, with Assam contributing significantly to this list.
The 25 awardees from Assam exemplify the state’s unwavering dedication to national safety. Their contributions highlight the critical role played by personnel in insurgency-affected and challenging regions of the North-East. This recognition underscores their commitment to maintaining law and order, as well as protecting life and property in complex situations.
The Police Service accounted for the majority of honors, receiving 78 of the 95 Gallantry Medals and 634 of the 746 Meritorious Service Medals. Fire, Civil Defence & Home Guard, and Correctional Services were also acknowledged for their invaluable roles.
