DHUBRI: On the occasion of the 30th foundation day of Aranya Suraksha Samiti (ASS), Assam, the organization observed the day by releasing fingerings in the Hakama wetland in Bilasipara. This programme is held each year with a view to conserve indigenous fish species. The programme was formally inaugurated by Secretary General of ASS, Dr Haricharan Das. In his brief speech, Dr Das said that the organization also releases fingerings in the other water bodies across various locations in Assam.
“Assam is blessed with abundant water resources — over a thousand beels (wetlands), around 300 river tributaries, and thousands of wetlands. However, without the protection of local fish species, the biodiversity of Assam stands at risk,” Dr Das added.
He stressed that if fishing is not restricted during the breeding season, and if the use of finer nets (locally known as ‘konkothiya”’) that capture fish eggs and juveniles is not stopped, it could lead to the depletion of fish populations.
Dr Das urged the Fisheries Department of Assam to strictly enforce regulations in this regard.
