BARPETA: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the political party which started during the wave of regionalism in the state of Assam celebrated its 38th foundation day today. Over 25000 members participated in an event organized in Barpeta to mark this occasion.

AGP president and minister Atul Bora greeted all party members as well as all the people of the state on the occasion. He also paid his tributes to the martyrs, leaders and all people who made sacrifices to take the party ahead.

Born out of the overwhelming support of the Assamese public, Asom Gana Parishad was created in the backdrop of the historic Assam Movement. Most of the leaders of the party came from student politics prevailing during the time. And failed gradually as the ideologies of nationalism gradually overtook regionalism in the state.

They went forward to set the wheels in motion for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections with pre-poll training starting from today.

After the signing of the Assam Accord on the independence day of 1985 between the Government of India, the Government of Assam , All Assam Students Union, and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad, the need for a local political party was felt. Hence during the Golaghat National Convention held in October of the same year, the new regional political party was created under the name of Asom Gana Parisad (AGP) with Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the then president of AASU on the helm.

They got a majority in the legislative polls that followed in December, 1985 and formed the government in Assam. They returned to power in the legislative elections of 1996 under Prafulla Mahanta. The Mahanta Government made way for the Congress government under late Tarun Gogoi in 2001.

AGP returned to the arena as a coalition partner in the Sarbananda Sonwal's Bharatiya Janata Party government in 2016. And Atul Bora became the leader of the local party after changes in the political party's constitution.
