39th Assam Academy of Mathematics organized at Dibrugarh University

DIBRUGARH: Assam Academy of Mathematics (AAM), Dibrugarh branch successfully organized the 39th Annual Congress of AAM in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University on Saturday at Dibrugarh University.

The congress was attended by Life Members of AAM of different district of Assam as well as school students of Dibrugarh district along with their Mathematic teachers. The day-long congress was started with flag hoisting ceremony in front of the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University.

The inaugural session of the congress was started at 10.00 am. Dr. Niranjan Bora, secretary of AAM, Dibrugarh branch welcomed all the delegates of the congress.

After that Prof PN Deka, president of AAM, Dibrugarh branch and Head, Department of Mathematics addressed the gathering highlighting the aim and objectives of the events. The congress was officially inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Hazarika appreciated the initiatives of AAM and highlighted the outreach activity of Dibrugarh for popularization of Mathematics education. Dr. Tarakeswar Choudhury, the founder secretary of AAM attended the inaugural session as a guest of honour of the congress.  Dr. Prabin Das, central president of AAM and Dr. Ashish Paul, the general secretary of AAM also addressed the gathering. Dr. Priya Dev Goswami, was felicitated in the congress, who recently retired from DHSK College, Dibrugarh.

As part of celebration of this prestigious Congress, one Mathematical Model Exhibition Competition was organized among the school students with an aim to showcase their innovative thinking and creativity in Mathematics.

Prof. Prasanta Chatterjee from Department of Mathematics, Visva-Bharati University, acted as a resource person for R.C. Gupta Memorial lecture and delivered a talk entitled “Nature and Mathematics: The creation of our civilization”. Moreover, Tazid Ali from Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University delivered a special talk in the congress on the history of zero and infinity.

A group of scientists from the centre for Plasma Physics, Guwahati led by Dr. Rakesh Moulick also demonstrated an excremental model in Plasma Physics. The congress ended with general body meeting of AAM to review the activity and proposed future plan of AAM.
