HOJAI: The third death anniversary of former minister and social activist Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey was observed by Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey Smriti Raksha Samittee at Netaji corner, JK Kedia road in Hojai on Sunday. Faizul Hoque, President, Bijoy Chakraborty, Secretary, Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey Smriti Raksha Samittee, along with other well-wishers and relatives paid homage in front of the portrait of Dr AK Dey. Speaking on the occasion, Educationist Pramod Ranjan Das remembered his contributions and said that we must emulate them. Bijoy Chakraborty said that the people of Hojai should never forget the contribution of four-times MLA from Hojai LAC, one-time from Lumding LAC, former minister, and noted social activist Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey. He said that Dr AK Dey always believed that unity is strength and did enormous development for the people of Hojai. Chakraborty added that it was very sad that till now no bust or road has been named after the doyen figure.
He said, “We once again reiterate our demand that his bust be installed at Hojai Girls’ College, Santiban Park, and that a road should be named after him, and every year we will observe his death anniversary, so that the new generation can learn about his contributions.”
Chakraborty also apprised the gathering that the Hojai Municipal Board had refused to give any portion of land in the town for the installation of the bust of Dr Dey and similarly Santiban committee had refused to give a place for the same. In spite of the obstacles, Chakraborty said that Dr Ardhendu Kumar Dey Smriti Raksha Samittee would install the bust of Dr Dey in Hojai soon.
On the other hand, Faizul Hoque, President, Dr AK Dey Smriti Raksha Samittee and Amar Chand Dey, ex-chairman, Hojai Municipal Board, also kept their views forward and remembered the doyen. They said that the contribution of Dr Dey for Hojai and in politics would always be remembered.
Dr Dey’s journey from a physician to a fire-brand politician and how he used to work for the upliftment of the people was recalled. Everyone prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. Notably, Dr Dey passed away on July 27, 2022. Dr Dey was a mass leader who always thought of the downtrodden first. In the year 2021, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and remained politically active till the last months before his demise.
