With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Borma Dharmeswari Devi, known to us as Bou, at the age of 92. A woman who embodied a mother’s love, boundless empathy, and a gentle, comforting presence, Bou was also my Jethai, my mother’s elder sister. If there is an afterlife, we take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with Bordeuta, Koka, Aaita, Deuta, and all those who have gone before her. Her spirit, full of warmth and compassion, will forever live in our hearts.
Bou married young and was the mother of eleven children, though tragically, she lost three shortly after birth. As the eldest daughter-in-law, she became a pillar of strength for our family, guiding us through difficult times, especially after my grandmother was widowed at a young age with five children. Her unwavering support played a key role in shaping Bordeuta, the late Harendra Nath Deka, into the loving and respected figure he became—not only for our family but for many in our village and beyond.
Although Bou never received formal education, she made sure all seven of her daughters and her son received the gift of learning. Ahead of her time, she encouraged her children to embrace the world’s opportunities, offering them the freedom and guidance to grow.
As I travel across the ocean to attend her Aadya Shraddha, I am filled with sadness, knowing I will never see her again. I will miss her soothing touch, her gentle enquiries, and her loving kisses. In this moment, I am filled with eternal gratitude, love, and respect for the goodness of heart she shared with us all. Her love made life truly worth living. Today, as we honour her memory, I celebrate her life and pray that she continues to bless us all from her heavenly home.
Hiranya Nath
