Sarojini Talukdar, our beloved grandmother, left for her heavenly abode on October 24, 2019 at the age of 83 years leaving all of us heartbroken. Our Aita, as we called her, was the wife of Sri Krishna Kanta Talukdar, our Koka.
Born at Pathsala, she was the eldest daughter of Late Baloram Talukdar, a renowned teacher of that region. As the wife of an engineer, she had to move house frequently and stayed in various places all over Assam – like Pathsala, Bohori, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and finally at Guwahati. She was a very social and amiable person and was always associated in all the activities of every neighbourhood that she lived in. As a result, she created a circle of friends and well wishers everywhere.
She loved her five children and brought them up with a lot of care. Nevertheless, she was a strict disciplinarian and would brook no disobedience from any of them thus ensuring that they could stand on their own two feet and rise in their respective careers. She was the central point of our large family and all of us, her grandchildren as well as her great grandchildren too occupied a special place in her heart. She was cook par excellence and could turn out a delicious Assamese meal in no time at all.
It is because of her that all of us youngsters became hooked on to the Assamese cuisine from a very young age indeed. Knitting was one of her hobbies and all of us have worn her beautifully knitted woollens every winter. It is difficult to imagine that she will no longer be amongst us and we shall not be able to call out Aita again . Today on her Adyashraddha, we pray to the Almighty for eternal peace of her departed soul.
