LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), as per directive of the central committee of the organization, on Saturday resounded the people's war bugle (Gana Hunkar), strongly opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA). The organization staged the protest programme against the contentious Act at North Lakhimpur Boys' Government Higher Secondary School playground in North Lakhimpur town.

The protest programme began with the paying of profound tribute to the five martyrs of the anti-CAA agitation - Sam Stafford, Ishwar Nayak, Dipanjal Das, Dwijendra Panging and Abdul Alim. By staging the protest programme, the organization reiterated its demand to repeal the Act immediately by rocking the environment with the resonance of various slogans amidst the blended sounds of khol, taal, doba, sankha, bortaal and borkah, which are the traditional musical instruments of the Assamese culture. The gathering of the protest programme flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union and the State governments for supporting and enforcing the 'communally motivated Act'. Addressing the protesters, AASU State executive member Dhanmoni Dutta came down heavily against the Act, the Union and the State governments.

"The CAA must be repealed. This Act will turn the people of the Assamese community into second class citizens. The Act will affect the Assamese culture, language and literature tremendously. The people of greater Assamese community will not live as second class citizens in their own home," Dhanmoni Dutta stated.

He criticized Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal with strong terms for not opposing the CAA. He also criticized him with regard to the death of the five youths who had to make supreme sacrifice during the anti-CAA agitation last year under the tenure of his chief ministership and for paying no respect to the departed souls. Further, he criticized the BJP MLAs and MPs of the State for their 'deaf and dumb' attitude towards the Act. He slammed the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for supporting the BJP being in alliance with the party and for not opposing the CAA. In addition to him, AJYCP central committee general secretary Sourabh Das, Lakhimpur district unit AASU general secretary in-charge Simanta Neog and other leaders also criticized the Act. All of them declared that the stir would continue until and unless the CAA was repealed.
