JAMUGURIHAT: Taking action against prostitution in and around the Sootea and Nagsankar area, a team of Sootea Police headed by Trilochan Das, Officer In-Charge of Sootea Police Station, managed to apprehend four boys and four girls from Maa Dhaba located on the entrance to Nagsankar Mandir on Tuesday.
The police had received complaints from the local residents regarding the anti-social acts that usually took place in the said dhaba. Accordingly, the police team raided the dhaba and found four pairs of youths in objectionable conditions and recovered materials that had been used during sexual activities. The police team apprehended the owner of the dhaba Hemanta Mech, a resident of Na-Telia gaon, Nagsankar.
On the other hand, the police team apprehended one Ritumani Saikia Nath, a resident of LB road, Sootea in connection with her running a prostitution racket at her residence. The accused Ritumani Saikia was arrested on Monday night.
A public meeting was held to condemn the anti-social activities that have been going on in the Sootea-Nagsankar area with Jyoti Hazarika in the chair at Nagsankar Natya Mancha on Wednesday. The public meeting condemned such anti-social activities and urged the civil administration to close the dhaba immediately and take strict action against the culprits.
As per the decision of the public meeting, a procession was taken out from Sootea Commercial Centre to the Naduar Revenue Circle Office on Thursday afternoon wherein thousands of local women and a section of men participated. The demonstrators shouted slogans against the illegal activities, demanded immediate closure of the Maa Dhaba, and made requests to initiate exemplary punishment against those involved in such cases. Later on, the demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner through the Circle Officer, Naduar Revenue Circle. On the other hand, miscreants set the Maa Dhaba ablaze on Thursday afternoon causing major damage to it.
