Guwahati: In a landmark move, NCERT has announced the inclusion of the Ahom dynasty in the Class 8 history curriculum under the chapter "Tribes, Nomads and Settled Communities." This shift aims to broaden the historical lens beyond the usual focus on empires like the Mughals, Mauryas, and Guptas, finally giving national recognition to Assam’s storied Ahom legacy.

The Ahom kingdom, which ruled the Brahmaputra valley for nearly 600 years (1228–1826), is renowned for its military might and administrative excellence. Most notably, the Ahoms thwarted Mughal invasions at least 17 times, preserving Assam's independence. Iconic figures such as Lachit Borphukan and Srimanta Shankardev stand as symbols of valor and cultural revival.

Founded by Sukaphaa, a Shan prince who crossed the Patkai Hills into Assam, the Ahoms contributed far beyond the battlefield — excelling in governance, architecture, agriculture, and cultural development. Monuments like Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar continue to testify to their enduring legacy.

Many see this inclusion as a long-overdue step towards representing India’s full historical diversity. While brief, the move is hailed as a milestone that could pave the way for deeper engagement with Northeast India's rich past. For millions of students, it opens a new chapter in understanding India’s plural heritage.
