BAJALI: The Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad (AJYCP) has strongly condemned alleged attacks and harassment by members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) against tourists from Assam and their vehicles in Meghalaya.
AJYCP central committee secretary Bijan Bayan said the alleged incidents were a serious matter of concern. He questioned why the Meghalaya government had continued to tolerate an organisation that, according to him, had brought disrepute to the state.
Bayan urged the Meghalaya government to take strict action against the KSU if such incidents continued. He said such incidents could seriously harm the spirit of brotherhood, peace and harmony among the people of the northeastern states.
“Though we consider Meghalaya an integral part of the Seven Sisters and have always maintained a bond of respect, fraternity and integrity with our neighbouring states, incidents of this nature make us question whether the same sentiment is being reciprocated,” Bayan said.
He also questioned the role of the Central Government, describing it as the “guardian” of the northeastern states, and asked why stronger and more decisive steps had not been taken to address the issue. The AJYCP leader further criticised the Meghalaya government for allegedly failing to take timely and adequate measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety and dignity of people travelling to and through Meghalaya. Bayan appealed to the KSU and other organisations in neighbouring states to avoid any form of harassment or alleged atrocities against people from Assam or other states.
He warned that such actions could weaken the long-standing bonds of unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among the people of the Northeast.
Bayan urged all concerned to maintain restraint and act responsibly, saying efforts should be made to strengthen rather than weaken regional harmony and brotherhood. The AJYCP also demanded strict action against the KSU, saying the safety of tourists and peaceful relations among the northeastern states must be protected.
