LAKHIMPUR: In the wake of the National Green Tribunals’ verdict in favour of the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP) set up by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji-Arunachal border, the anti-big dam organizations came out on to the street against the big river dam in Lakhimpur.

Strongly opposing the construction of the controversial river dam, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) blocked the NH-15 between Pahumara and Ranganadi River bridge on Saturday. Shouting various slogans against big river dam, NHPC Limited, State Government and Union Government, the protesters demanded that construction of the LSHEP, which had been in halt from 2011, should be stopped. The organization reiterated its stand once again against the big river dam which was considered to be a water bomb to destroy the valley of Subansiri covering Lakhimpur and Dhemaji up to the island district of Majuli.

Leading the agitation programme, AJYCP vice-president Hemchandra Goswami came down heavily on the State and Union governments along with NHPC for their move to construct the project by ignoring the sentiments of the people of the State and security issues of the Subansiri riverine people. They demanded to stop the project. The organization submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of the demand. Regarding the issue, the organization will stage sit-in on August 5 in the district headquarter, stage a 100-hour long programme from August 10 to prevent the transportation of project construction materials and build human chain on August 20 at Gogamukh.
