MANGALDAI: The Darrang District Committee of the AJYCP stated that the proposed large-scale river dams, including the Lower Subansiri River Dam, posed a threat to Assam’s riverine civilization, culture, biodiversity, and ecosystem. Opposing the construction of all such large river dams that it said could destroy Assam’s civilization and culture, and demanding Assam’s flood problem be recognized as a national issue with a permanent solution to the flood and erosion crisis, the committee organized a three-hour sit-in protest at the District Library premises.

Speaking at the event, the AJYCP advisor, Bhabesh Kakati, stated that water from the 405-megawatt Ranganadi River Dam alone has been causing havoc in Lakhimpur district every year and that it was unimaginable what devastation the water from the 2000-megawatt Lower Subansiri River Dam, which was five times more powerful than Ranganadi, could cause. Kakati said that instead of being concerned about Assam’s flood and erosion problems, the central government seemed preoccupied with devising strategies to extract resources from Assam. Kakati asked, “If the water of the Northeast’s rivers can be considered a national resource, why can’t the problems caused by this water be treated as a national issue?”

The protest was attended by Kamrul Haque and Central Executive Member Diganta Deka, besides fifty members from the Pub Mangaldai, Deomornoi, Mangaldai Town, Uttar Darrang, and Sipajhar Anchalik committees.
