LAKHIMPUR: The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU) staged a two-hour long sit-in in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday as per the direction of the central committee of the organization.

Staging the protest, the organization demanded to stop harassing people in the name of disposal of objections in National Register of Citizens (NRC). The organization submitted a memorandum to the District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) in respect of discrepancy in the ongoing process of disposal of claims and objections. Through the memorandum, the organization demanded the DRCR to reject the objection ex-parte at the threshold where the objectors remained absent in hearing, to furnish detailed particulars of the objectors in the notice for hearing as well as to the person against whom such objection was made, to fix the hearing venues within reasonable distance of same localities of the persons who were being called for disposal of claims and objection, to take all necessary steps so that no single Indian citizen was left out of the final NRC.

District president Aminur Rahman, working president Rofik Uddin Ahmed, general secretary Badiur Rahman, in-charge general secretary Minhas Ali along with central committee and district committee dignitaries of the organization were present in the protest.

SARUPATHAR: The regional unit of AAMSU of Sarupathar in Golaghat district staged a two-hour protest in front of the subdivisional office in Sarupathar to demand exclusion of people whose names were wrongly included in the final draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

"During the hearings of claims for inclusion in the NRC, several cases have come to light where people seem to have been wrongfully included," said an AAMSU leader of Sarupathar regional unit.

He also added that the provision of verification in the Citizenship Rules should be applied in letter and spirit. "It has been endorsed by the Supreme Court of India and is part of the standard operating procedure. If they are applied, it will definitely help in coming up with a correct foreigner-free NRC," said the AAMSU leader.
