Anti-Child Labour Day observed across Assam

As a part of week-long campaign against injustice to women and child, the Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) organized Anti-Child Labour Day

TINSUKIA: As a part of week-long campaign against injustice to women and child, the Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) organized Anti-Child Labour Day in sync with observance of World Day against Child Labour on Monday in accordance with the theme ‘Social Justice for all-End Child Labour’.

The CDI organized a rally at Hijuguri Tinsukia involving children from locality as well as students from Assamese school and Prabatari English School which culminated at Holy Child School where Satyan Narayan Boruah District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) addressed the gathering in presence of school’s principal and Sisters of Charity. He spoke on the need for provision of quality education to prevent children under 14 years of age from becoming a child labourer. The students were made aware on the importance of observing the Anti-Child Labour Day all over the world. A total of 51 students took part in the rally.

SIVASAGAR: On the occasion, Gargaon College organized a webinar on the topic “World Day Against Child Labour” to create awareness and contribute towards abolishing child labour. The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Zoology, Department of Assamese, Women Cell (GCTU), IQAC and 11 Assam Girls (I) Coy NCC, Gargaon College.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Rina Handique, Vice-Principal, Gargaon College and Head, Department of Zoology, Gargaon College. In her inaugural speech, Dr Handique spoke about how children are employed in various establishments and the negative consequences of such child labour. The keynote speaker for the programme was Dr Pobon Kr Gogoi, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, Gargaon College. In his enlightening speech, he highlighted the reasons behind child labour such as poverty, lack of access to education, demand for cheap labor, limited labor protection, arm conflicts, lack of awareness, etc. He further described about the adverse effects of child labour such as deprivation to education, health and safety issues, negative economic effects, social and moral responsibilities.

He appreciated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in 2015, which embraced a renewed global commitment to end child labour intending to take effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of child labour in all forms. He further talked about the scenario of child labour in India and across the world, emphasizing on the initiatives adopted by United Nations (UN) for combating child labour across the globe. Moreover, he spoke about the legislations involved in Indian constitution for combating child labour and the penalties associated with the offence of child labour.

The programme was attended by around 50 participants which included students and faculty members. Devajani Bakalial, Assistant Professor of the Department of Assamese moderated the programme. The webinar ended with the offering of vote of thanks by Dr Anuraag Protim Das, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology, Gargaon College.
