SILCHAR: In a major political move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi launched the party’s campaign groundwork in Barak Valley on Saturday. As part of this effort, Gogoi actively participated in several programmes across Cachar and Hailakandi districts, signalling the Congress party’s intent to strengthen its base in the region.
While addressing the media during his visit, Gogoi came down heavily on the state’s BJP-led government over its ongoing eviction drives. He challenged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to reveal the exact number of Bangladeshi infiltrators identified and evicted during these operations. “The Chief Minister should come out clearly on the exact number of Bangladeshis amongst the evicted persons,” Gogoi stated, asserting that if the government had indeed identified foreign nationals, due legal procedures must be followed to deport them.
However, Gogoi also raised serious concerns over the alleged eviction of legitimate Indian citizens. He stressed that in such cases, the state must provide proper rehabilitation and compensation to those affected. “It’s really very amazing that the Chief Minister has been dodging the plea for tabling the exact figures of how many Bangladeshis had been detected during the eviction drives,” he said, questioning the transparency of the process.
Adding to his criticism, the APCC chief accused the BJP government of large-scale financial misappropriation. He alleged that while several ministers were busy “minting crores of rupees,” the general public continued to suffer under rising prices and economic distress.
