SILCHAR: In Assam's Cachar district on Thursday, as many as 22 buffaloes were saved.

The truck was reportedly traveling from Barak to Bangladesh via Meghalaya when it was stopped in Cachar, according to sources. The truck's registration number is ML 04 A 8824.

Two individuals from Meghalaya's Khliehriat have been detained by the police in connection with the seizure. Their names are Larios Sieh and Silas Labre.

The police have been successful in saving cow heads and buffaloes from smuggling during the previous few months. In a similar case a few months back, 32 buffaloes were taken from the BG Yard in Bamunimaidam by the New Guwahati Railway Police. The buffaloes were transported by train from New Delhi to the state.

Approximately 1,100 cases of livestock smuggling have been reported to Assam police in recent years, according to sources. Additionally, the police have detained 417 vehicles, 9,454 cattle, 992 smugglers, and more.

In addition to these, the Assam Police asserted that in the previous 11 months, the number of active criminal cases had decreased.

The south and north Bengal sectors of India's eastern borders saw the operation of livestock smuggling rings between 2011 and 2019. They have relocated their base to various locations in Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura during the past three years.

Cattle traffickers previously used the opportunity presented by the severe flood in Assam to transport cattle heads to Bangladesh in advance of the Eid celebrations by accessing the unfenced section of the India-Bangladesh border.

On July 24 and 25, Border Security Force (BSF) agents arrested more than 200 cattle that were being smuggled into Bangladesh on boats in Dhubri, South Salmara in West Assam, and Coochbehar in neighboring North Bengal.

Sources claim that Assam Police detected more than 1100 incidents of livestock smuggling in the last year, according to government statistics.
