MANGALDAI: The Darrang district administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure peaceful, free, and fair Panchayat elections under the Panchayati Raj system, scheduled in the second phase after a gap of seven years.
Darrang Deputy Commissioner Parag Kr Kakaty, while briefing the media recently, informed that polls in the district will be held on May 7 for 12 Zila Parishad (ZP) constituencies, 75 Anchalik Panchayat (AP) segments, and 750 Gaon Panchayat Wards.
The poll process will be conducted by the Sipajhar and Dalgaon Co-District Administration in their respective areas, while the DC's office in Darrang will oversee the Mangaldai LAC area.
Filing of nominations will continue until April 11, with April 17 set as the last date for withdrawal. Notably, candidates contesting for Gaon Panchayat Wards will not be allowed to contest under any political party affiliation. However, this restriction does not apply to ZP and AP candidates.
DC Kakaty, in the presence of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Election) and Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations), highlighted new eligibility criteria for candidates. These include a maximum of two children, no charges related to child marriage, and possession of a sanitary latrine, among others.
A total of 656,967 voters will exercise their franchise across 813 polling stations in the district. Over 4,000 election officials have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the elections, he added.
