GUWAHATI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced on Sunday the appointment of Bhaban Choudhury as the acting state president of its Assam unit, five months after he was replaced from the position. This decision comes as the party's permanent president, Manoj Dhanowar, is currently inactive due to personal reasons. The executive committee unanimously selected Choudhury during a meeting held on Saturday.
Choudhury, who previously led AAP Assam before Dhanowar's appointment in September, wasted no time in addressing pressing political concerns. He condemned the escalating political violence, suppression of democratic protests, and targeted defamation campaigns against opposition leaders and their families. "The BJP government is systematically undermining democracy by silencing dissenting voices," he stated.
He highlighted the growing public discontent over critical issues such as rising prices, communal tensions, environmental degradation, and recurring floods in Assam. Choudhury accused the BJP of creating a chaotic environment to instill fear among the populace ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
Choudhury also targeted the one-man Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission report on the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) scam as politically motivated and biased. He raised the alarm on the abuse of administrative resources for political ends, alleging that the political climate under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sunk to an "all-time low," with an emphasis on personal rivalries over good governance.
