DIGBOI: All Moran Student Union (AMSU), supported by hundreds of people, today organized a protest at Tinsukia’s Dirok close to the Assam-Arunachal border gate, following the arrest of 6 AMSU activists by Mahadevpur Police in Arunachal’s Namsai district.

Earlier in the morning, 6 AMSU activists were allegedly arrested for their involvement in agitations on Arunachal’s Statehood Day on Thursday at Lekang Circle in Namsai district.

The disgruntled agitators, in hundreds, chanted slogans against the police and government and marched to the Mahadevpur Police Station demanding the unconditional release of the arrested youths. Later, securing the conditional and custodial release, the infuriated student body resorted to a sit-in at the highway close to the border gate demanding PRC from the Arunachal Government and scrapping of cases registered against the arrested AMSU activists.

“The people of the greater Moran community of Assam and Arunachal would stir against the Arunachal Government in case the long-pending demands of our Moran community are not met,” said a Moran student leader during his address to the media today afternoon.

Steadfast in their two-fold demands, grant of PRC and unconditional release of arrested Moran activists of Lekang, the officer bearers of AMSU warned of launching economic blockade at all the strategic locations of Assam bordering Arunachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, taking a strong note on the issue, All Arunachal Pradesh Student’s Union (AAPSU), during their address to media, had vehemently lambasted the act of the AMSU organizing a protest on such a historically important day like Statehood Day. Questioning the competency of the DC and SP of the Namsai district, the AAPSU had demanded the arrest of the erring activists and for them to be booked adequately under the relevant sections of the law. The Arunachal Government is yet to react on the issue of PRC following the failure of its efforts earlier in 2019.

It is interesting to note here that the matter concerning the PRCs in Lekang constituency is taken up mostly ahead of or during Assembly and Panchayat elections. Reportedly, local politics also orbits around the issue for securing mileages whatsoever.

Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on the highway leading to traffic congestion and untold sufferings of the people unable to cross the border gate at Dirok till the filling of the news.
