Assam Assembly Concludes Historic Budget Session With Key Legislative Milestones

Speaker Biswajit Daimary said that the 15-day session saw five new laws being passed and scores of amendments to existing legislation.

GUWAHATI: The budget session of the Assam Assembly concluded yesterday, marking a historic moment as it was the first to be held in Kokrajhar, outside the permanent Assembly complex in Dispur. This new paradigm in legislative proceedings is a testimony to the government's attempt to ensure inclusiveness and regional presence.

During the session, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog tabled the annual budget for the fifth consecutive time, with a focus on sustained efforts to empower women in Assam. Speaker Biswajit Daimary said that the 15-day session saw five new laws being passed and scores of amendments to existing legislation.

The recently passed legislation includes the Appropriation Bill 2025-26, the Edtech Skills University Bill, the Maa Kamakhya University Bill, the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill and the Swami Vivekanand University Bill.

Apart from this, a number of amendment bills were also approved, pertaining to various fields like education, governance, public services, taxation and local administration.

Key amendments included the Assam Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill and the Assam Municipal Employees (Provincialisation) Bill, along with reforms affecting institutions like Bongaigaon University and Nagaon University.

The session highlighted the Assam government's commitment to institutional development, regional autonomy and educational progress. The approval of these bills is expected to have a significant impact on the state's academic, economic and administrative life in the future.
