SILCHAR: Counting of votes for the Panchayat election began on Sunday at a snail’s pace with clear indications of landslide victories for the BJP in maximum seats in ZPC and AP. Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav said that counting began after an hour of delay due to heavy pouring since Saturday late night. District administration sources however indicated that the counting would be wrapped up by Monday late night.
Out of the 25 Zila Parishad seats, BJP was declared unopposed in 2. Among the remaining 23 seats, the BJP was maintaining a steady lead in almost 18. On the other hand, the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) counting centre in Silchar saw a fierce altercation between the supporters of two independent candidates leading to disruption of the ongoing vote count for the Silchar constituency. Minister Kaushik Rai said that he expected a thumping victory as the people had absolute confidence in the BJP government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
A candidate from Chenkoori under the Tapang Zila Parishad of Borkhola constituency, pulled ahead by a narrow margin of just 12 votes. The narrow lead sparked tempers, leading to an outbreak of violence between rival groups. A police constable and a supporter, identified as Chandrasen Das, sustained serious injuries. Both were promptly rushed for medical treatment. However, the police managed to bring the situation under control and detained four individuals involved in the clash.
Following the incident, Silchar Police had intensified security measures at the counting centre.
