Dibrugarh: The streets of the town wore an abandoned look on Tuesday as a result of the bandh called by more than 46 indigenous organizations.
The strike, which came in vehement opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was seen having the desired impact with the normal life coming to an absolute halt here. Educational institutions, financial organizations and other commercial outlets, inter alia, remained shut throughout the period of the bandh. Apart from a couple of minor acts of aggression and coercion by the supporters of the strike, no untoward incident of a grave nature was reported till the filing of this news report. However, few instances of commuters facing inconveniences in the absence of the functioning of private commercial transport were reported.
DHEKIAJULI: The 12-hour Assam bandh evoked a total response in Dhekiajuli Revenue Circle on Tuesday. Earlier in the morning, the bandh supporters came out and burnt tyres in NH-15 of Dhekiajuli town to prevent movement of vehicles. The bandh supporters went to the Dhekiajuli daily bazaar and stopped businessmen from opening their business establishments. The bandh evoked a total response in neighbouring towns of Dhekiajuli Revenue Circle like Thelamara, Sirajuli, Misamari and Singri also. The business establishment was closed and attendance was thin in government offices. In Rakhyasmari, five bandh supporters were detained by the police. No untoward incident was reported till filing of this report. Security was beefed up during the bandh period in Dhekiajuli revenue circle area.
GOLAGHAT: Normal life in Golaghat district was paralyzed on Tuesday during the Assam bandh. The bandh supporters came out on road in the early morning and staged a protest by burning tyres on roads at Numaligarh, Khumtai, Purabangla, Rongajan, Tetelitol, Bengenakhowa, Furkating and Golaghat town. During the bandh, a night super bus from Merapani to Guwahati was destroyed by picketers at Furkating, a truck and a Bolero pick-up were damaged at Halmira and Bengenakhowa area. Almost 29 picketers from Golaghat town and 31 picketers from other parts of the Golaghat were picked up by Golaghat Police.
Almost all educational institutions, banks and other commercials establishments and government offices remained closed. Vehicles remained off the road. Markets also remained closed. The district administration had made adequate security arrangements and there was no report of any kind of major violence in Golaghat district.
NAGAON: Despite the strict directives of the government, the 12-hour Assam bandh in Nagaon district was total and successful. During the bandh, almost all commercial establishments remained closed and roads wore a deserted look. No violence was reported except some incidents of tyre burning by bandh supporters. Attendance in government offices was thin. The effect of the bandh was partial in Hojai and Lanka. Schools, colleges, offices and other business establishments functioned normally.
