BISWANATH CHARIALI: In a significant breakthrough against narcotics smuggling, Biswanath Police intercepted a Swift Dzire vehicle with registration number AS12G0346 carrying a large consignment of cannabis early this morning. At around 7:00 AM, a team led by the ASP (Crime) Biswanath, along with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Biswanath Chariali Police Station and staff, set up a checking operation. Upon spotting the search operation, the suspected vehicle attempted to flee but was intercepted after a high-speed chase at Lehugaon Bypass under Biswanath Chariali Police Station.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 18 packets of suspected marijuana or cannabis, packed in white polythene bags. A drug-detection kit confirmed the substance as cannabis. The seized contraband was duly weighed in the presence of independent witnesses, amounting to 92.8 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 46,40,000. The police arrested two individuals in connection with the seizure. They were identified as Dipak Deori (40 years), s/o Late Aka Deori of Narayanpur Bheluguri and Muhim Bhuyan (52 years), s/o of Late Bipin Bhuyan of Narayanpur Johkuria under Narayanpur Police Station in Lakhimpur district.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway under the supervision of the ASP (Crime) Biswanath.
