SILCHAR: Leading organisations like Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya Samskriti Sammelon (BUBSSS) vehemently criticised the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for vandalising the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Shillong during their rally. In a press note, former General Secretary of BUBSSS Gautam Prasad Dutta said that the way the KSU rally tried to dishonour the statue of Swami Vivekananda was also very deplorable. Dutta said that attacks in various forms on the minorities and non-tribals in Meghalaya had become a trend and termed the failure of the police and administration to tame such unruly vandalism unfortunate. Dutta further alleged that the recent incident in Shillong was a preplanned act of vandalism.

On the other hand, the Barak Democratic Front (BDF) also criticised KSU for attacks on the tourists and non-tribals. Pradip Dutta Roy, the Chief Convenor of the BDF, urged Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure the security of the people of Assam staying or travelling in Meghalaya. Dutta Roy further added that the Union Government should also take serious note of such incidents.
