TINSUKIA: Tinsukia district in Assam has been rocked by a terrifying occurrence. A well-known businessman and his supervisor were kidnapped from a stone mill in Jagun by a group of five unidentified individuals who are thought to be members of the banned militant outfit ULFA-I.
According to reports, the terrorist group had threatened the victim, Bhai Chetry, a prominent figure in the area. The abduction, carried out under mysterious circumstances, also involved his supervisor, Prakash Bahadur Chetry.
Prakash Bahadur Chetry is still in captivity. However, Bhai Chetry was later freed in the Tirap area of the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh.
Since this is the second kidnapping in the area in the past two months, there are grave worries that militant activity may be on the rise again. In an effort to find the perpetrators and understand the motivations behind this bold conduct, local officials are currently looking into the situation.
Earlier this month, the Satgaon police station solved an abduction case that sent shockwaves through the city. Before being kidnapped, Nur Hussain Talukdar, a native of Botaghuli Tiniali, was enticed by a contract offer. On December 3, he was abducted in the middle of the night and saved that same evening.
Using Talukdar's phone, the abductors sought Rs 2 lakh in extortion money from his family. The family was told to deliver the funds to Panjabari's Nabajyoti Nagar neighbourhood.
The Satgaon police station received a complaint from the family. When the two kidnappers, Hassan Ali and Shah Nawaz Alom, showed up to pick up the ransom money, the police set up a trap and took them into custody. Three further conspirators were able to escape the scene. In addition to trying to capture the remaining kidnappers, the police are looking into the case.
