Guwahati: A number of strategic initiatives were approved by the Chief Minister-led Assam Cabinet to facilitate the economic growth of the state. In addition, a number of key developmental issues across all sectors were also addressed.
Oil palms were classified as a cash crop by the Cabinet and it is expected that the crop will help in boosting the agricultural economy of the state. In order to improve the growth of wood-based industries, guidelines for the establishment of industrial estates were also approved by the Cabinet.
A subsidy of Rs 5 per litre for dairy farmers was sanctioned to sell their products through cooperative societies. New milk processing plants were also approved to be set up in Jorhat and Dibrugarh. It is also anticipated that new milk plants will be set up in Dhemaji and Cachar.
The Assam Directorate of Town and Country Planning will also witness restructuring so that challenges in urban areas such as the issue of flooding can be addressed in a more efficient manner.
Initiatives to endorse tea tourism at Dirugarh's Lepetkata tea estate and Sonitpur's Durrung tea estate was also made in the Cabinet. Vegetable and betel sellers have also been exempted from paying fees to leaseholders in a significant move to support small vendors and reduce their financial burden.
