GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved a key change in the designation of police officers during their weekly meeting on Wednesday, June 5, to streamline the hierarchy within the Assam Police.

Currently, police officials heading co-districts are designated as Co-District Superintendent of Police (CDSP), a title which, according to the Chief Minister, appears more senior in nomenclature despite SPs holding a higher rank.

To rectify this discrepancy and ensure a clear and consistent rank structure, the Cabinet has decided that district SPs will henceforth be known as Senior Superintendent of Police. As part of this change, the shoulder insignia for Senior Superintendent of Police will now include two stars along with the Ashoka Stambha. This measure aims to establish a proper sense of hierarchy and uniformity in police ranks across the state.

Meanwhile, in a significant administrative overhaul, the Assam government announced a large-scale police reshuffle in May, coinciding with the expansion of its co-district governance model.

As many as 39 officers from the Assam Police Service (APS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) cadres have been transferred or posted as Co-District Superintendents of Police (SPs) across the state, signalling a generational shift in the state's policing leadership.
