Morigaon: The Cancer Care India National Conference, a crucial platform in the nation’s fight against cancer, is set to take place on March 22 and March 23 at Zizina Resort in Pobitora, Morigaon district. This marks the second time Assam will host this prestigious event. The conference, along with the Annual General Body Meeting, is being organized by Cancer Care India with strong support from Devasish Sharma, IAS, Chairman of Cancer Care India, and Morigaon District Commissioner.
The conference will see the participation of 40 delegates from various states across India, as well as international representatives. Notably, four Padma Shri awardees will be present to share their invaluable experiences. The inaugural session on March 22 will be officially opened by Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika. Additionally, Dr R. Ravi Kannan, Director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to cancer care.
On the same day, Dr Jayesh Dineshbhai Patil from the Manage Health Foundation will deliver a talk on “United by Unique – Walking Besides Them.” The Dhwani Foundation will present a report on the challenges faced by NGOs regarding compliance, statutory rules, branding, and fundraising. Professor Dr Bibhuti Bhushan Barthakur, Director of B. Barua Cancer Institute in Guwahati, will address the critical topic of “Patient Navigation in Cancer Treatment Centres – Needs, Challenges, and Solutions.” In addition, the Deepsikha Foundation will organize a cultural programme, adding a vibrant touch to the proceedings.
The second day of the conference will be attended by the Governor of Assam, Laxman Acharya. Devasish Sharma, Chairman of Cancer Care India, emphasized that the conference aims to assist in policy-making at the national level while introducing innovative ideas in cancer care. He praised Assam’s remarkable efforts in cancer care, noting, “The state’s initiatives surpass those of other regions. The Assam government has done tremendous work towards cancer care,” he added. Sharma highlighted the importance of strengthening the fight against cancer, particularly on non-medical fronts.
Sharma further elaborated that representatives from the northeastern states of India have been invited to the event, emphasizing the collaborative effort to tackle cancer. Since its formation in 2002, Cancer Care India has united 32 groups across the country and is actively collaborating with international groups from the Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. The organization continues to push for the establishment of cancer hospitals and the development of stronger cancer-related policies at both the central and state government levels.
The Cancer Care India National Conference promises to provide a vital platform for collaboration and policy development, aimed at enhancing cancer care and awareness across India and beyond.
