GUWAHATI: In a significant breakthrough, the city police have successfully dismantled an interstate motorcycle theft ring, apprehending six individuals across Assam and Meghalaya. The arrests followed intelligence gathered from reliable sources, leading to the capture of three prominent bike lifters from Assam.
The arrested suspects were identified as Md. Abdul Hanif Seikh (32) from Jhograpar, Dhubri; Md. Rafiq Ali (30) from Sontoli, Kamrup (R); and Md. Jakir Hussain (27) from Baghbor, Barpeta. They were arrested by Gorchuk Police and Special Operations Group (SOG) of West District.
After their interrogation, the police laid down a trap in Jowai, Meghalaya, in which three receivers were apprehended who were distributing the stolen vehicles. With the support of the Meghalaya Police, Dibormi Amrynsong, 26, Tunadahun Matra, 25, and Rimiki Suchiag, 22, were arrested near the India-Bangladesh border in West Jaintia Hills.
The operation recovered several bikes, including a Royal Enfield (AS01FJ7567) from Jowai Bypass and two more motorcycles – a Bajaj Avenger (AS01DU2357) and another Royal Enfield (AS01FE3496) – from Karkhana village, which is just near the border.
The police also seized some lock-breaking tools like three master keys and a hand saw, all of which linked the suspects to the organized theft of vehicles.
A successful operation over the weekend showcased the efficiency of city police in dealing with organized crime, as numerous stolen vehicles were recovered, and key suspects were arrested.
