GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented the appointment letter to Arjuna Awardee and Olympian archer Jayanta Talukdar, officially appointing him as the Deputy Superintendent of Police on February 16. Talukdar was handed over the letter during the felicitation ceremony held at Guwahati's Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.
Speaking at the event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the archer's remarkable achievements, adding that his recognition should have come much earlier. Furthermore, CM Sarma expressed regret over the delay in honoring him due to the previous government's actions, noting that his prime years were before 2014.
Jayanta Talukdar, born on March 2, 1986, has made remarkable contributions to Indian archery. He won an individual gold medal at the 2006 Archery World Cup. Talukdar was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2004 Junior World Championships.
He bagged a gold medal at the FITA Meteksan World Cup in 2006, becoming the first Indian archer to win gold at the event. He also won a gold medal at the South Asian Games and a bronze medal in the team competition at the 2006 Asian Games.
Despite facing challenges in 2009, Talukdar was seeded Number 1 for the World Cup in Copenhagen. Recognizing his outstanding contributions to the sport, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in archery in August 2007.
