GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unleashed a scathing attack against the Congress, accusing the party of using the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to get electoral mileage.
He slammed the Congress while speaking at an event recently, in which he termed the Congress a "shameless" organization that failed to honor Ambedkar while excessively promoting figures from the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Sarma highlighted that Congress had historically dedicated numerous schemes and institutions to Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi but had neglected to name a single prominent initiative or university after Ambedkar.
“During Congress rule, was there ever a university or significant program named after Babasaheb Ambedkar? For 22 years, I was part of the Congress, and I never saw even a photograph of Ambedkar in any Rajiv Bhawan,” he asserted.
He further accused the Congress of downplaying Ambedkar’s contributions during his lifetime, citing the delay in awarding him the Bharat Ratna as an example. Sarma argued that the recent celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters lacked sincerity and were driven by political motives.
“When did Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi start garlanding Ambedkar’s portrait? This newfound admiration is nothing but a political strategy,” Sarma alleged.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ended with an accusatory tone on the Congress's usage of the sacrifices made by Ambedkar for political purposes. The chief minister termed this an "unprecedented act of opportunism."
