ORANG: The Assam Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Friday, addressing the Vijay Sankalp rally at Orangajuli in Udalguri, declared that a political ‘tsunami’ in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was sweeping across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). He asserted that elections in BTR would no longer be decided under the shadow of weapons, but through respectful engagement with the people.
Taking a jibe at the Bodoland Territorial Council’s Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs), the Chief Minister compared them to ‘borali fish,’ remarking that central and state welfare schemes were often swallowed before reaching to the beneficiaries. Dr Sarma underlined his government’s commitment to ensuring that every woman benefits from the Orunodoi scheme.
While recalling that in the past, political arrangements like sharing 30–10 or 20–20 council seats with allies such as UPPL and BPF could have kept him in power, he clarified that this time the BJP was contesting independently to directly address the problems faced by BTR residents. Appealing to the public to vote for the BJP’s lotus symbol regardless of community, caste, or religion, he promised transparent governance and reiterated his commitment to government job appointments without bribery, announcing that fair recruitment drives would be implemented in Kokrajhar as well.
The Chief Minister also listed key development initiatives for Udalguri, including distribution of Orunodoi benefits to over 20,000 people in Udalguri, establishment of a college in Garuajhar, construction of bridges over the Kulshi river and the Shuklai-Kala river in Bhalukpung, a mini water supply scheme at Moinaguri, upgradation of Orangajuli playground into a modern sports facility, development of a mini playground at Hatigarh, and upgradation of Hatigarh Higher Secondary School to a Higher Secondary and Higher Education institution. Dr Sarma concluded with a strong call to make the BJP victorious in the maximum number of council constituencies in the upcoming BTC elections.
