Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized the need for a nationwide NRC-like document to identify citizens and differentiate them from infiltrators.
Criticizing West Bengal for its lack of cooperation, he highlighted the difficulties in securing the country’s borders and suggested that government interventions in Assam and Tripura could effectively curb infiltration.
Sarma also expressed concerns about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh and reiterated his support for the concept of 'one nation, one election.'
While visiting Puri’s Jagannath Temple, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma advocated for a nationwide NRC-like document to distinguish citizens from infiltrators. Addressing the media, he noted that Assam now mandates NRC registration for Aadhaar card eligibility.
Addressing concerns about attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, Sarma expressed confidence in Prime Minister Modi's diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue.
He also voiced support for the 'one nation, one election' policy, emphasizing its potential to streamline developmental initiatives. Additionally, he dismissed the political influence of the BJD in Odisha, predicting BJP's eventual dominance in the state.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has implemented a major policy shift: Aadhaar applications would be rejected if the applicant or their family members haven't applied for inclusion in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
This was declared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a Cabinet meeting. The move was primarily attributed to the concern over infiltration attempts from Bangladesh.
Infiltration from Bangladesh remains an urgent issue for us, stated Sarma while mentioning the latest apprehensions made by the Assam Police, the Tripura Police, and the BSF in the last two months. "It is high time for the strengthening of the Aadhaar mechanism for resolving these issues of security."
