THIMPHU: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be present as the chief guest during Bhutan's National Day festivities on December 17, 2024. The strengthening diplomatic ties between Assam and Bhutan are highlighted by the fact that this is the first time an Assam chief minister has been invited to the esteemed event.
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, the King of Bhutan, will give a special speech during the National Day celebrations in Thimphu. The bilateral ties between India and Bhutan are anticipated to be further strengthened by CM Sarma's attendance.
CM Sarma expressed his gratitute for the invitation in a social media post that read, "I am on my way to Thimphu to attend Bhutan’s National Day celebrations at the invitation of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk. I sincerely hope this visit will reinforce the enduring friendship between the great people of Bhutan and the State of Assam."
Assam's increasing diplomatic presence abroad and its attempts to strengthen its relations with its neighbours are highlighted by this visit.
Early in the 17th century, a Buddhist monk named Ngawang Namgyal brought Bhutan together for the first time. The Zhabdrung, who were reincarnations of Ngawang Namgyal's body, mind, and speech, oversaw it under the Tibetan dual system of governance.
Buddhist mythology and tradition are deeply ingrained in Bhutan's early past. According to legend, a saint who could transform into eight distinct forms travelled to Bhutan and imprinted his body and cap on rocks.
According to Bhutanese textbooks, demons once terrorised communities and demolished temples before being magically trapped and converted to Buddhism. There are many stories about angels rebuilding temples and spirits destroying them. Another legend describes a saint who transformed into a garuda, a bird that is distantly related to the griffin, while flying on the back of a tiger.
Every year on December 17, the Kingdom of Bhutan observes National Day as a public holiday.
