DIGBOI: Overwhelmed at the recently declared uncontested statistics in panchayat polls’ tally in favour of BJP -led NDA in Assam, the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will blow the panchayat poll bugle at Digboi in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam on Monday.
Confirming the development, Digboi BJP legislator Suren Phukan told that the Chief Minister would on Monday address the public from Tingrai General Ground in Digboi.
“Preparations are afoot in war footing to ensure smooth conduct of affairs with all line departments liaisoning well to this effect thus accommodating the general public and party leaders from across the district,” said Phukan.
‘I am blessed that CM Sarma would campaign from my constituency on Monday and I take this with pride as a merit certificate for Digboi BJP fraternity,” added the legislator when asked about the reasons determining Digboi as the venue. Polling for the three-tier panchayat system is scheduled to be held in two phases — on May 2 and May 7 . Tinsukia district enters polling in the first phase.
The initial success of the BJP -led NDA following the win of 325 seats of the total 348 seats in the panchayat system in Assam, the tally after the poll is expected to rise impressively in Tinsukia district too with the poll address by the Chief Minister in Digboi slated on April 21.
A total of 348 seats in the panchayat system in Assam were decided uncontested with the BJP-led NDA securing 325.
As per reports, the NDA has already secured 37 Zila Parishad and 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats unopposed while the independents have secured 15 Anchalik Parishad seats uncontested, the Congress nine and the AIUDF carried one seat.
However, Digboi too has also contributed with 8 wins (7 Gram Panchayat members and 1 Anchalik Parishad seat) declared uncontested from the constituency under the popular leadership of Suren Phukan who was allegedly involved in luring the voters with false promises during one of his marathon meetings in Buridehing segment recently.
Amidst growing anti incumbency factors and serious allegations of blackmailing the voters, Suren Phukan has succeeded in impressing the government with his satisfactory progress card and irreplaceable leadership qualities within the constituency.
There are a total of 130 seats in the Gram Panchayats, 13 seats in the Anchalik Parishads and 4 in the Zilla Parishads in all 13 panchayats of the Digboi constituency.
The decision of the Chief Minister to hold a poll rally in Digboi for entire district itself bears testimony of the fact that Digboi BJP MLA has made a satisfactory and commendable progess building a strong bond with the people of the constituency beside contributing to the growth of party,” said one of the top officer bearers of district BJP unit terming the legislator as “a leader with huge mandate and assured win-ability.”
Meanwhile, the oppositions including the Congress and Raijor Dol too have been leaving no stone unturned to take advantage of the growing anti -incumbency factors of the incumbent Digboi MLA in the upcoming panchayat election.
Raijor Dol leaders have also expressed strong confidence of securing unwavering support from Buridehing belt - a segment with more than 30,000 voters with a strong regional sentiments. Regional AGP - an ally with the rulling BJP in Assam too have miserably failed to generate adequate response from the people for want of strong leadership in Digboi.
AGP has failed to field adequate candidates in the polls despite favourable landscape developing amidst growing inclination towards regional sentiments among the voters.
