In a significant welfare move, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the "12 Days of Development" initiative on Wednesday, with the goal of benefiting approximately 12 lakh people statewide within just 12 days.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed his dedication to the state's development, stating that the 12-day initiative would have a positive impact on the lives of these families, particularly benefiting students, women, and those affected by floods.
As part of the initiative, Chief Minister Sarma provided cash awards and other incentives to students, along with financial support to flood-affected families, all within the span of 12 days.
At the distribution ceremony held at Sarusajai Stadium, cash prizes were awarded to 26,969 students who scored 75% or more in the HSLC exam, under the Anundoram Borooah Merit Scholarship.
In addition, 3,23,640 bicycles were distributed to Class IX students under the Chief Minister's Special Scheme, aimed at promoting education and alleviating transportation challenges.
In a significant move to support higher secondary students, the Chief Minister distributed 48,673 scooters to girl students who passed with first division in the higher secondary exams, as well as to boys who scored 75% or above, under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award within the Pragyan Bharti Scheme.
He proudly stated that the ecosystem created in Assam, where students are no longer required to pay admission fees and receive various incentives, is unique and unparalleled in any other state.
Chief Minister Sarma said, “Assam is a state that works relentlessly for the development and upliftment of students. We are creating a system that nurtures future generations and empowers them.”
Sarma also emphasized the state government's initiative to offer financial relief to flood victims, ensuring they would receive compensation for their losses.
He reaffirmed his commitment to waive loan repayments for mothers who had taken loans of up to Rs. 50,000 from financial institutions. He further added that the government is issuing NOC and clearance certificates on behalf of these women to assist them in repaying their loans.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the educational reforms he introduced during his election campaign, including a monthly stipend of Rs. 2,500 for college students and the waiver of examination fees.
