GUWAHATI: In a significant development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, June 5, announced the launch of an advanced artificial intelligence-based system aimed at detecting and preventing deforestation across the state.

Sharing a video on the social media platform X, the chief minister said the system would provide real-time alerts to authorities whenever illegal deforestation activities are detected.

“Assam now has an AI-based system which will alert us immediately when any attempt of deforestation is being made,” Sarma posted. “This will enable us to effectively stop deforestation and save our green cover.”

Speaking to reporters, Sarma elaborated on how the system works. He said a new portal, powered by AI and satellite technology, has been introduced to monitor forest areas and wildlife.

The chief minister noted that earlier, forest officials were often informed only after major damage had already occurred. The new system will allow for instant alerts, enabling faster response by enforcement teams. With this move, Assam aims to strengthen forest protection efforts and curb illegal logging more effectively than ever before.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, amidst the challenges posed by recent floods and adverse weather conditions, the West Karbi Anglong district launched a significant tree plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
