MARGHERITA: The deplorable condition of National Highway 315 passing through the Margherita town has caused immense hardship to the local residents, as the road which has not been renovated for a long time, turns into a virtual pond during rainy season, making it difficult for commuters to travel.

The road stretch between Bargolai and Tirap Colliery of Ledo has become particularly treacherous, with deep potholes and craters making it nearly impossible for vehicles to pass through as this has led to several accidents, resulting in injuries and even loss of life.

Despite repeated demands from local organizations and individuals, the authorities of National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) have failed to take adequate measures to repair and renovate the road. The local residents have appealed to the Assam Government and Margherita Co-District Administration several times to take immediate action to construct the road and restore smooth traffic flow.

Papu Dutta, President of Satra Mukti Sangram Samity of the central executive committee, has condemned the authorities of NHIDCL including Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma and Margherita Co-District Administration for their inaction and demanded immediate construction of the road.

Additionally, the illegal coal-loaded vehicles, which ply during the peak season, have caused several damages, for which commuters and daily passersby are suffering regularly, said Papu Dutta.

Dutta said that patients, school and college students, office goers, businessmen, traders, and the general people regularly have to think before crossing from Margherita to Jagun and from Jagun to Margherita as due to the big potholes, many a times accidents occur leading to deaths and injuries, but even then, the authorities of NHIDCL, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, and Margherita Co-District Commissioner have no time to visit this place.

“We appeal to the authorities of NHIDCL, the Margherita MLA and Margherita Co-District Commissioner to take out time and visit the road once and urge the higher authorities to repair and renovate the road as soon as possible,” said Papu Dutta.
