GUWAHATI: In a tragic road accident which occurred at the New Saraighat Bridge located on the outskirts of Guwahati, a cyclist was killed on the spot after a speeding dumper ran over him in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was riding towards Amingaon when the dumper hit him. Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased was employed as a security guard. However, his identity is yet to be confirmed.
The incident sparked immediate action from the Jalukbari Traffic Police, who chased down and apprehended the driver of the dumper truck. The driver has been identified as Jamal Ali, a resident of Nagarbera in Kamrup district.
Shockingly, reports indicate that he was operating the heavy vehicle without a valid driving license. Following the accident, police officials sent the body for a post-mortem examination at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The accident has once again raised concerns over reckless driving by heavy vehicles on the bridge, which has witnessed multiple such incidents in recent times. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against the guilty, urging heavy vehicle operators to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies. Further investigation is underway.
Similarly, a fatal accident took place in the Kharikhana region of Lanka in Assam's Hojai district when a speeding tipper truck carrying sand ran over and killed a 60-year-old cyclist identified as Alim Uddin Majumdar.
