Assam: Dalai Lama Fellowship Member visits Biswanath District

BISWANATH CHARIALI: Vivienne Walz, a Canadian national and member of the Dalai Lama Fellowship Programme, 2014, visited a number of schools at Biswanath Chariali in the Biswanath district on Saturday along with her mother, Regula Walz. It needs mention here that 18 people were selected from different parts of the world for this fellowship programme by the USA-based organization named Dalai Lama Fellows for those people who were working at the community level in their respective fields.

Vivienne Walz is working at present in the field of community health, indigenous knowledge, and education in Canada. She was interested to observe and understand the school education system in India, particularly in Assam. Dr. Abhimanyu Datta, Lecturer, DIET Sonitpur, Biswanath Chariali, and Block In-charge of the Biswanath Education Block, accompanied her to two schools, viz. Chariali Adarsha Prathamik Bidyalay and Chariali Adarsha Vidyapeeth.

At Chariali Adarsha Prathamik Bidyalay, she interacted with the teachers, parents, and the students. Vivienne Walz and her mother also attended the morning assembly followed by discussions with the head teacher, Dulumani Kalita; Block Resource Persons (BRP) Nayani Hazarika and Utpal Bhuyan; and Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator (CRCC) Anjan Borah. Vivienne also interacted with the students of the nursery group and taught them a song, performing a dance with the children. The school organized a cultural programme on the occasion.

At Chariali Adarsha Vidyapeeth, Vivienne Walz interacted with the students of classes nine and ten. She talked about the various educational opportunities, fellowships, and education system in Canada and encouraged the students to gain knowledge from all different sources. She emphasized on the negative impact of using smartphones and encouraged the students to refrain from using them unless they meet the educational needs. 

Later, Vivienne expressed that she was amazed to see the dedication of the school teachers and their efforts. She also appreciated the students for their interest and for their passion to carry their own culture and tradition.
