Assam: Death anniversary of Lakshminath Bezbarua observed at Gargaon College

SIVASAGAR: The 87th death anniversary of Xahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua was celebrated at Gargaon College by Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha and Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha Chapter in collaboration with the Department of Assamese, Gargaon College today. As a part of the Axam Xahitya Xabha’s annual tradition, Gargaon College celebrated Xahitya Divas on this day by hosting a lecture on ‘The Sentiment of Humour in Lakshminath Bezbarua’s Literary Works.’ The talk was delivered by Dr Jibon Kalita, Head and Associate Professor of the Department of Assamese, Nazira College, and Vice-President of Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha. In a captivating and informative talk, Dr Kalita shed light on the different facets of hasya rasa, skilfully tracing its elements in the literary oeuvre of the revered Rasaraj Lakshminath Bezbarua.

Earlier inaugurating the programme, Monuj Kumar Gogoi, Secretary of Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha, applauded the visionary leadership of Principal Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta in launching the Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha chapter. He expressed optimism that the chapter would commit itself to promoting and enriching the Assamese language and literature. He further elaborated on the various initiatives that Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha plans to undertake, aiming to engage and inspire the younger generation to join its mission.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, distinguished academician, litterateur, and Principal of Gargaon College, as well as Chief Advisor of the Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha chapter, highlighted the pivotal role of Xahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua in enriching and preserving Assamese language and literature. Dr Mahanta emphasized the importance of collective efforts by stakeholders, including teachers and parents, in nurturing love and respect for the mother tongue among the younger generation, encouraging them to learn and contribute to Assamese language and literature.

Pranab Dowarah, Head of Assamese Department and President of Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha, highlighted Xahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua’s contributions to Assamese language and literature. He expressed gratitude and satisfaction at the chapter’s establishment and hoped it would tirelessly promote Assamese language and literature.

The event was moderated by Debajani Bakalial, Assistant Professor of the Department of Assamese and Secretary of Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha branch. Distinguished guests present on the occasion included Diganta Konwar, Vice-Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Simanta Baruah and Monuranjan Taye, executive members of the Central Committee of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Aruna Chetia Khataniar, eminent writer and member of Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha, among others.

Dr Ankur Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Department of Assamese and Assistant Secretary of Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha Chapter, delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was attended by all the executive members of Gargaon College Xahitya Xabha Chapter, students, and faculty members of the college.
