BOKAKHAT: The Dhansiri River is often called the lifeline of Golaghat, and the people of Golaghat take great pride in it. But, unfortunately, for the past few days, the sand mafia has been illegally excavating and dumping sand along the city’s banks, horribly polluting the waters of the Dhansiri. As a result, the river’s water has become severely contaminated. Apart from affecting the people of Golaghat who depend on Dhansiri’s water for drinking and daily use, these destructive activities pose a grave threat to the river’s fish, birdlife, and all aquatic organisms. At the same time, the riverbanks of the Dhansiri in Golaghat have been turned into a dumping ground for all of the city’s waste, and the burning of that waste is raising carbon dioxide levels in the area.
