Assam: DHSK College Declared Tobacco-Free Educational Institution

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has declared the historic DHS Kanoi College as a tobacco-free educational institution.

DIBRUGARH: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has declared the historic DHS Kanoi College as a tobacco-free educational institution.

The college was declared a tobacco-free educational institution by the concerned ministry on December 20, 2024, as per U-DIICE No. 18150408509, with effect from today. 

The college was awarded such a certificate for fully complying with the guidelines to be followed as a tobacco-free educational institution.

 It is considered a milestone in the history of the 80-year-old college. The certificate was provided online by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, to the college. Dr. Pankaj Kumar Shrutikar, General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Dibrugarh Branch, and Dr. Bharati Dutta, President, Science Society, Dibrugarh Branch, officially handed over the certificate to Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia, Principal of DHS Kanoi College. 

The event was attended by AATSA Dibrugarh District Secretary Lakhinder Kurmi, Professor Dr. Moromi Talukdar, Student Relations Coordinator Dr. Jyoti Prasad Phukan, Professor Upasana Dutta, and several other faculty, staff, and students who were present. The college has already won the titles of ‘Green Audited College’ and ‘Best Cleanliness College.’

The college has been awarded the ‘Centre of Excellence’ award by the United Nations North East Resource Centre. The college has been awarded the 2nd National Swachh Bharat Award for cleanliness in the country by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation of the Central Government in 2017, the ‘Best Disciplined College’ award’ in the Dibrugarh University Youth Festival in 2020, and in 2022 and 2023, the college was awarded the ‘Best Clean College’ award in the Dibrugarh University Youth Festival, 2024.

The Indian Postal Department issued an envelope in the name of DHS Kanoi College in 2023, ‘Dibrugarh Cleanliness Award’ by Dibrugarh District Administration in 2018, and ‘Clean College of Assam’ by Dibrugarh Nagarik Mancha in 2022. The college has received the ISO-9001: 2015 certificate for providing quality education. The college was provided with the prestigious honour of ‘Establishment of Institutions Innovation’ in 2024 by the Innovation Cell of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. 

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has issued a certificate of appreciation to the college for implementing Swachhata Hi Sewa in 2024. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, declared DHS Kanoi College as the first educational institution in the North East with a Knowledge Institution tag.
